From the moment I laid eyes on Cusco from the plane, I knew that I had
arrived at a sacred land. I am not sure if the fact that I was traveling here with some of my best friends, to a place that I had dreamed of visiting for so long, incremented the magical experience. Nevertheless, I was certain that this ancient city held the fascinating rich culture I had learned about. Continue reading
A dream is born in the heart of every child, with a yearning to do something bigger than themselves. With innocence and imagination they paint a world as colorful as their crayons, where they become the heroine or hero of their story. There are no limits or boundaries to those who believe and dream, that is until someone or something shakes them out into a reality they accept for their lives, and leave their dreams forgotten. They say some places leave you breathless and sometimes even speechless. For a while I contemplated the experience I had while I visited Machu Picchu and I was really at a loss of words. It is not that I couldn’t write about its history or offer any recommendations of my trip, but truthfully, I am sure you can find better articles out there about that. You see, I am concerned with the human experience, the civilization that dwelled in this place high above the clouds. Continue reading
Some people regard Buddhism as a religion, but for many, it is actually a philosophy and a way of life. When I was in Thailand, I was intrigued to learn more about the ways one can incorporate some of the basic concepts into everyday life. I visited temples in different cities, observed many of its practices, learned about loving-kindness, and took a meditation class with a monk. Continue reading
Watching my feet sink in the sand, I allow my solute to comfort me as the sun begins to set in Ko Pha-Ngan. This Thai island brings thousands of people from around the world each year for it’s over the top full moon parties, but on this evening my stroll on the beach is not as festive. It is tranquil, and the only sound I hear is the crashing of the waves where the shore meets the sea. Continue reading
When the ones I love sleep in a world I left behind, I am awake in a strange land. However, it is I who is strange here, yet I am welcomed as one of their own people. Thailand has challenged me and pushed me out of my comfort zone. It humbles me everyday, reminding me of my childhood in Cuba. Reminiscing of those moments as I am sitting at a café all my senses are awaken. The sound of the calm music along with the raindrops by the windowsill, play the perfect harmony. At this very moment the books around me, and my thoughts that linger on are all I have. Continue reading
Why is it so important to figure out what our purpose is? Is it so we just head in it’s direction without looking at what the rest of the world has to offer? What if from the beginning I thought that my purpose was to be a dancer. I wonder if I would have ever stopped to write or travel, or be the the crutch for someone in need. Maybe not knowing is a blessing in disguise that at first seems to cloud the mind with confusion but ends up opening a world of possibilities. In the end, our purpose is not just to be a mother, or an architect, or volunteer for a worthy cause. It is to realize that our essence of being alive allows us to be all that and more, to be able to be a part of something bigger than ourselves. Aside from every culture, language, religion, skin color, we are tied to a common bond that connects our very own existence. We are children of the Universe (whom I call God), given the present of living for today.
