The wind echoed her cry and the desert was her only companion. Legend tells the story of a beautiful Inca princess who fell deeply in love with a soldier. When he left to war, she promised she would wait for him until his return. The mornings turned into nights and all she ever received was a notice that her love had died in battle. Heartbroken she cried in despair. Her tears rushed down her face ceaselessly falling into the sand, creating a lagoon. This is how the name of the oasis Huacachina, which means crying woman, came to be.
With a mystical oasis in the middle of the Peruvian dessert, I knew I was in for an adventure. My friends and plunged in for the ride of the dune buggy that took us into a thrilling and exhilarating journey into the sand dunes and the heart of the desert. Once we arrived to the highest of dunes that seemed to be mountains, we grabbed our sandboards and made our way down 100-300 feet to the bottom.
After the adrenaline-filled experience, we were able to relax in the small town that surrounds the Oasis. With mystical legends, adventures, and friends, this experience felt like it was from a movie, yet the reality of it will play in my mind forever.
